Oh, Baby!

Celine Dion, 42, and her husband have announced they are expecting twins. John Travolta's 47-year-old wife, Kelly Preston, is also pregnant. It seems as if for most celebs, 40 is the new 30 when it comes to conceiving. Celebs are able to shell out thousands of dollars for what experts call “assisted reproductive technology.” Next up? Rumors are swirling that Ashton Kutcher, 32, and his wife Demi Moore, 47, are trying hard for a baby. If you're into name-dropping big celebs (and your clients would think it's fun), run a welcome baby promotion!

Saying Adios

Will American Idol survive without Simon Cowell? He told fellow judge Ellen DeGeneres this week that he’s feeling a bit sad, but he’s also clearly excited for a change — telling Oprah Winfrey last week that he’s “on automatic pilot” a lot of the time. “I can’t hide it when I’m bored. I just can’t fake it,” he said. Idol will miss him more than they know, as he leaves the show to start his own talent competition The X-Factor. Follow your passion by tapping relationships to figure out how you can transition current work into something new.

Win-Win

What makes fusion marketing a success? TEAMWORK! First and foremost, identify your Power Partners. Second, communicate and determine the offers for each partner. Next, set up regular meetings to ensure everyone agrees on how to market each other’s business. And of course, share prospect and lead lists. It’s really a win-win for everyone involved!

License Plate Not Allowed

Is "Bioch" a bad word? New Jersey thinks so. They're trying to take away one resident's custom BIOCH license plates because they received a complaint that they were “offensive”. The owner is upset because people like the plates and think they are funny. Now she has no choice but to turn in the plates or New Jersey will not renew her registration. Same goes for your business; you can’t expect to hit cruise and never experience a big bump in the road. You’ll have to think fast and always be on your toes to overcome those obstacles. Hhmmm… maybe she could change it to BIOTCH and persuade them it stands for BIOTECH? HA!

YouTube Turns 5

YouTube turns 5 this month. With two billion views every day, it's hard to imagine an Internet without it. YouTube is much more than a domain name; it’s a utility, a social network, a search engine, a source of online storage, and an endless source of entertainment to pass the time. I predict it’s only a matter of time before YouTube starts charging monthly fees to subscribers. It’s pretty genius marketing scheme that any business could follow. Offer free incentives or new client specials to help build your rock solid customer base. Just make sure to keep ‘em happy once they’re hooked. Better yet? Team up with other businesses to sweeten the deal.

Spoken from the Heart

The former first lady, Laura Bush, has embarked on a national book tour. Her new memoir, Spoken from the Heart, is a very candid look at her childhood, courting days with George Bush, and her time in the White House. She also details a tragic accident that changed her life forever. Her book should encourage business owners to be real and show their personality. You may turn off some people, but most will welcome the refreshing honesty and personality.

New Kid on the Block

President Barack Obama nominated Solicitor General Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court yesterday, declaring the former Harvard Law School dean "one of the nation's foremost legal minds." She’s the court's youngest justice and one of three female members. Some critics argue whether or not she’s qualified due to her lack of court experience. Compare that to a new business. In my opinion, sometimes the novice is driven by pure motivation to be the ‘best that they can be.’ When you know you're right, trust your instincts. Ignore the critics and surround yourself with positive supporters!

The Sweet Stuff

Out with the old, in with the new! As Sandra Bullock leaves husband Jesse James, she has one man who she’s standing by; her new son Louis. The city of New Orleans is still buzzing with the news that Louis is from New Orleans – and the Oscar winner is getting a lot of love sent her way. Not only is she a talented actress, but she is a true humanitarian. Team up with other area businesses to pay it forward. You’ll be amazed at how good it feels to give back.

Mother's Day is Big Business

According to research, consumers will spend close to 16 billion dollars on Mother's Day this year. How can marketers tap into this? Make an emotional connection. Rather than saying “Don’t forget Mother’s Day”, if you were a kitchen/appliance store you could rather ask, “Did your Mom teach you how to bake? Make her feel special on May 9th.” So this year, be sentimental, not generic.

Consumers Hungry for Deals

Discount stores such as The Dollar Store and Dollar General are still laughing at the recession. Do some consumers need to buy those pink paper plates? Probably not, but hey – they’re only a dollar. What a deal! Consumers these days are more conscience of how they spend their money than ever before. Although most have stayed brand loyal, many will just go with whatever is the cheapest. Sure- you don’t want to be known as the “cheap” guy, but think about offering a summer special, or join forces with another business to lure deal hungry customers to your doorstep.

NFL Draft changes TV Lineup

Back in the day, the NFL didn’t even want the NFL Draft televised. Fast forward 75 years; not only is the NFL draft televised, it is watched by nearly 40 million people. It is officially must-see TV. This year the draft will kick off in prime time for the first time. This benefits everyone; audiences get another day or night to hold draft parties, and broadcasters get the prime spots to advertise. Think of a win-win promotional event that will benefit you and other area businesses.

Is Kate Gosselin the new Sanjaya?

Former “American Idol” Season 6 contestant Sanjaya Malakar made it through most of the season despite lacking overwhelming talent, due to a mix of heavy Internet lovers and haters. Websites and radio guru Howard Stern both heavily lobbied for Malakar to stay on Idol. Current “Dancing With the Stars” contestant, Kate Gosselin and her dance partner Tony, begged people to vote for Kate, even if they hated her. The key to getting the Sanjaya effect behind Gosselin will be organized support in the media. Think of intriguing ways to team up with other businesses to entice the media.

Fairytale Ending for Phil Mickelson

Phil Mickelson won his third green jacket at the Masters on April 11th. It was an emotional win for Mickelson, whose wife, Amy, had not been at a tournament since she was diagnosed with breast cancer 11 months ago. Determined to win for his family, he scored the lowest score at Augusta in nine years. After the 18th hole, he shared a warm tearful embrace with his wife as he walked to the scoring trailer. With the endless media coverage of Tiger Woods, I saw Mickelson’s win as a “breath of fresh air.” Drive and determination pay off. There will always be unwanted distractions; ensure your business goals are in check.

Betty's Big Comeback

After 60 years of show business, Betty White’s comeback has just begun. After appearing opposite Sandra Bullock on The Proposal, Betty says she's having a blast and didn’t realize how she could have had been away. Her Super Bowl Snickers commercial created a new generation of fans, in addition to a massive Facebook campaign that was launched to land Betty a Saturday Night Live hosting gig. She'll be taking the stage at the SNL studio in May. Brainstorm ways your business can join forces with recognized brand names to establish a new following.

iPad for every "Modern Family"

This past Wednesday’s episode of Modern Family showcased the iPad; Apple’s newest product that promises the best way to experience the web. On "Modern Family," Claire was eager to buy an iPad for husband Phil's birthday and set her alarm to stand in line. She snoozed past the opportunity, enlisted her family's help and, by episode's end, was able to get hold of the prize item. Very smart on Apple’s end to showcase their iPad on a popular show days before the iPad release. Analysts believe there were around 700,000 iPads sold this past weekend. At upwards of $500-$800 a pop, that’s a lot of pad. Think of clever ways to showcase your new product or service.

American Idol a Big Deal

Each week on American Idol, contestants receive advice from a “seasoned” mentor in hopes to better their chances of sliding through to the next round. The most recent guest to give advice was Miley Cyrus. Would I call her seasoned? Based on profits, yes. At only 17, Miley is one of the most successful female actresses turned pop-star. It’s a big leap from her Disney days. Who else performed at the Idol results show? Fellow Disney stars– Joe Jonas and Demi Lovato. With millions of weekly Idol viewers, I bet the Disney brand was happy. Where can your business make a guest appearance to boost relevance and sales?

Who's Got Your Back?

First Tiger Woods, now Jesse James. I feel so bad for Sandra Bullock, who should be on top of the world with her recent Best Actress Oscar, but is instead hiding out and cancelling promotional events. I hope she is surrounding herself with supportive friends and family who have her best interests at heart. Same goes for your business… surround yourself with business partners who’ve got your back. And for your pocket’s sake, invest the time to decipher meaningful collaborative gigs. If you have to start small, so be it; one good partner is better than none.

Tiger's Return

Tiger Woods will be returning to golf at the Masters beginning April 8th. The highest TV rating for the Masters was in 1997, when Tiger Woods, then 21, became the tournament's youngest champion with a record 12-shot victory. Obviously, the ratings will be through the roof with his return after his 4-month hiatus. I’m wondering if there will be cheers or jeers. Well, there will be plenty of viewers to find out. If your business is in need of a ‘come-back’, think about cost-effective ways to fuse your marketing with your perfect power partners.

To Pass or Not To Pass

Health care reform is such a hot button, and quite frankly, we’re sick of hearing about it! Pass it. Don’t pass it. Just get off center. If our clients ran their businesses the way Congress (with all due respect) runs, sales would be stagnant. Hmmm. Republicans and Democrats need to collaborate. There’s a reason we’ve stuck to collaborative MARKETING. We like our successful track record. It seems that politics today is just no fun!

March Madness

As the NCAA basketball tournament kicks into gear this week, March Madness will be taking over your workplace. There will be office pools, team upset predictions, and smack talk around the water coolers. Amid the chaos, some say productivity and earnings may take a hit, but others say the shared experience is good for business. I think collaborating with other organizations to promote a high stakes NCAA tournament pool would increase the work dynamic. Someone who dreads going to work might come energized about the games. Likewise, promoting the pool could increase camaraderie and boost productivity.

Toy Story

Collaborating marketing efforts is nothing new. Disney and McDonald’s have mastered the art of business collaboration and cross promotion for more than a decade. When a new major animated film was set for release by Disney, consumers anticipated the Happy Meal toys at McDonald’s to tie-in with the film. The relationship to cross promote was clearly a win-win for both partners. Effectively learning how to market with other businesses can decrease ad costs and skyrocket your success!

Oscar Night

Who doesn’t love Sandra Bullock? She’s beautiful, never aloof, and married to an all-around cool guy, Monster Garage’s Jesse James. We’re so glad she won The Oscar Sunday night! She’s always red carpet classy. (Oh, yea, her acting doesn’t suck either.) How can you tap into the Oscars to create big buzz and promotion for your business? Maybe you could invite clients to share their own celebrity sighting stories… and if they bring in a copy of a photo with a celeb, they get something free or discounted. Create a celebrity & client wall of fame.

Go Ahead, Tweet Your Own Horn

Twitter reached a huge milestone yesterday: 10 billion tweets. Unfortunately, the milestone came from a protected user, so they turned to the next logical tweet: 10,000,000,001. While most of the tweets have been annoying reminders about what your friends are eating, there have been some monumental tweets; photos taken from space, picture of Miracle on the Hudson. Think about some of the milestones you’ve reached with your Spitfire business and use them to your advantage. Girl, it’s time to celebrate (and of course promote) your well-deserved accomplishments!

Funding Your Dream

Well-known Olympic athletes are like celebrities, but for a majority of them, they are unknown, and barely scraping by to fund their dreams of competing in an Olympics. Some athletes have resorted to extreme forms of fundraising to earn money for travel and training expenses. In one example, a New Zealand taekwondo athlete has opened a brothel to finance his preparation for the 2012 Olympic Summer Games in London. Not really the Spitfire Mom’s choice… but certainly thinking outside the box! How can you fulfill a need while lining your pockets? With drive, determination, and a bit of creativity, the sky is your limit!

Beat It

Aksel Lund Svindal, the winner of the gold medal for Norway in the Super-G, has come a long way since his horrifying crash of ’07. After emergency surgery and months off from skiing, Aksel came back strong in 2008.

Here’s a link to a hilarious video of Aksel and other Norway Alpine team members dancing their hearts out to Michael Jackson’s “Beat It”. The video description says that this is "The secret behind Aksel Lund Svindal's success..." He's got three 2010 winter Olympic medals so far, and Michael Jackson is awesome, so I can't argue with that. What’s the secret to your Spitfire success?

Think before you click

A few nasty keystrokes and a click of the mouse and your life and business can be turned upside down. If you want to vent about something DON’T do it online, or even in an email. Of course it feels good to let off some steam, but doing it online on sites like Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace can be career ending. The same goes for your Spitfire kids. Just weeks before gradating, a high school student in Tennessee was expelled for typing his frustrations about a teacher online. Bottom line: educate you and your family about the dos and don’ts of the online space. Just like Vegas, what goes online, stays online.

Keep an Eye on the Prize

When U.S.A. Vancouver Olympian Hannah Kearney stood on the pedestal to receive her gold medal for freestyle skiing, the moment was overpowering. Four years ago, she was the defending world champion when she competed in the Turin Olympics, but she stumbled on her qualifying run and finished 22nd. "Everything happens for a reason," she said of her 2006 failure. This rings true for Spitfire business owners. Failure can offer insight; it makes you take a good look at what went wrong, where you can improve, and actions to take for future success.

Get Yourself Noticed

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are always in the news. I don't care much about their day-to-day goings-on, but you have to admit they know how to get noticed! I'm not advocating weird behavior, but if you can think of anything out of the ordinary for attention... try it! One local businessmom sat on the roof of her store for 24 hours to raise money for the football team. It happened to be the coldest day of the year so far — but it worked!

Milka What?

The New Orleans Saints' victory on Super Bowl Sunday was watched by more than 106 million people, surpassing the 1983 finale of "M*A*S*H" to become the most-watched program in U.S. television history. Wow. That’s a lot of people.

It always amazes me that companies who spend millions of dollars for those coveted Super Bowl commercial spots strike out. Ensure you have a solid plan BEFORE spending your hard-saved dollars on advertising your new business. My favorite Super Bowl commercial? ETrade Baby Girlfriend. Male baby lying about being on ETrade to his girlfriend when he was really cheating on her with a baby milk-a-holic named Lindsey. Genius.

Better to be Safe than Sorry

I am always giving my Toyata RAV4 praises when other riders ask me if I like it. No joke, I always respond the same way; “I love my RAV – it gets great gas mileage and it’s dependable. Toyota is a great brand.” Thankfully, my precious RAV was not affected by the faulty brake pedal that has affected millions of newer Toyota models. However, Toyota was fast to react, and so far, seemed to handle crisis management very well. Toyota is the number one car company in the world, but that’s not what they strive for. Their secret to success? Total dedication to customer safety. And right now, Toyota dealers are going above and beyond to take care of customers, and to rebuild their confidence and trust. This is a perfect example of how a brand SHOULD react when hit with a crisis.

Gaga for Gaga

I was excited to watch the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards on Sunday night. I didn’t care so much about who won what awards, but more about who wore what. Lady Gaga, known for her wacky outfits and controversial performances, definitely made a fashion statement throughout the night showcasing several wacky getups. The cameras couldn’t get enough of her; I sure couldn’t wait to see what she had on next. Whoever is in charge of her crazy wardrobe is brilliant. Take note from Gaga: create some buzz and set your Spitfire Mom business apart from the rest.

Avoid the WAH Scams

Spitfire Moms: DO NOT fall victim to the biggest work-at-home Internet scams. Jobs that require YOU to pay an upfront fee to get started are clearly a rip off. These types of businesses are just trying to make a quick buck on your behalf. Do your research to ensure that the job is in fact legitimate. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Avoid jobs that claim they “do the work for you,” companies that have no real physical address, and assembly type work such as stuffing envelopes.

Comfy Chic

We modern Spitfire Moms sure do have it good. Technology makes working from home so easy. While the kiddos are napping we can focus on accomplishing our personal and professional goals – whatever those may be. What’s one great reason I love working from home? I get to dress casual. Ok, maybe even less than casual. If I don’t plan on leaving the house, most days you’ll find me in my workout gear until 2:00! Let’s face it; showers during the day and getting ‘dolled up’ can be tricky when you have a full day. Of course, if you plan on Skyping, you might want to throw on a shirt without stains and spit up. Because, well, we Spitfire Moms always have it together.
