The Olympic Advertising Winners & Losers

What a fabulous two weeks watching the world's athletes compete in Beijing. The emotional connection to men and women giving everything they've got will linger long after the closing ceremony...and so too will the VISA ads narrated by Morgan Freeman. That instantly recognizable voice over images of athletes' individual stories connected with viewers around the world. From epic to personal, Visa’s “Go World” Olympics campaign featured ads that were timeless, contemporary and fabulous.

Contrast that with the lame commercials by McDonald's featuring athletic-looking men and women praising a new chicken breakfast sandwich or the assembling of a Big Mac as a competitive event. Bad, bad.

A local bank spent a bundle airing commercials with the bank president inviting viewers to call their 800 number. Problem? No 800 number was ever given! Bad, bad. That's no way to capture new leads or grow a business.

Before you spend a bundle on advertising, identify your unmistakable brand identity, your key messages and your call to action. Start with your free Boost Your Bottom Line Marketing Mastery Success Kit at www.boostyourbottomline.com, then email us at info@boostyourbottomline.com for a free Jumpstart Session.

Swim in Olympic Profits: Market Like Mike

If you want to go far, hitch your wagon to a star — rising star Michael Phelps, with his record-breaking Olympic gold medal wins. You can bet some lucky agent's cell phone is burning with calls to set up endorsement contracts. Why not hitch your marketing wagon to this star, too?

Being a small business without millions to spend, your "hitch" will be a creative one. Brainstorm how your product or service can be linked in any way to swimming, the Olympics, and Michael Phelps' gold.

Jewelry stores, partner with your local gym to promote "worth your weight in gold" by giving anyone owning a gym membership a special price. Ice cream shops, create a "Phelps Olympic Crunch" sundae with 8 scoops and gold spoons. Athletic gear purveyors, brainstorm an "All-American, Made in China" promotion. Coffee shops, pizzerias, t-shirt shops — promote the "Phelps 8" with buy 8 and get 1 free.

Add a philanthropic dimension to your promotion to make your marketing go even further. Give 10% of every sale to your local swim team. Now that's newsworthy for your business.

Whatever your promotional idea, hitching your marketing wagon to the latest hype will spark interest and gain more exposure for your small business.

Want help brainstorming or promoting your perfect rising star idea? Get your Boost Your Bottom Line Marketing Mastery Success Kit at www.boostyourbottomline.com, then email us at info@boostyourbottomline.com for a free Jumpstart Session.

IKEA is Zeroing In On Cuban Market

It's been seven months since IKEA introduced all things Swedish to Orlando. Remember the fanfare? Invitation-only shopping before the November grand opening; IKEA loyalists sleeping in tents outside the store. Now that the fanfare has ended, IKEA is trying to zero in on their Orlando target audience. In the process they’re learning a lot about the local Hispanic and college student markets. One key takeaway: Orlando's Puerto Rican market is different from South Florida's Cuban population.

Focusing on the lifestyles, dreams and challenges of a target market is the only way businesses will be able to attract customers and prospects. Each target requires specific tactics to attract those local segments. One size will not fit all.

Take a lesson from IKEA. Zero in on your core target market. Start by completing the Core Target Market field work in the Boost Your Bottom Line Marketing Mastery Success Kit. It’s at www.boostyourbottomline.com. Complete the field work, then email us at info@boostyourbottomline.com for a free Jumpstart Session to determine what’s next.

Create ONE Remarkable Marketing Message for Consistency, Clarity and Results

What’s the first thing that pops into your mind with the mention of the word marketing? Do you get excited about all of the possibilities…or do you freeze at the thought of developing strategies and tactics?

90 percent of small business owners do not have a marketing plan, yet most know that it takes seven to 10 impressions to make an impact and inspire a prospect to take action. Repetition is critical, but what is the best way to proceed?

The surefire way to ensure success is to pre-determine your marketing and the action required to reach seven to 10 impressions. Here are 7 strategies to focus your efforts:

1. Be remarkable. Define ONE quality that sets you apart from your competition and turns your customers into loyalists buying from you again and again. Focus on that ONE remarkable quality, develop a clear, consistent marketing message, and repeat that ONE marketing message in everything you do.

2. Maximize word of mouth. When you have a business identity or brand that inspires, fascinates, engages and rewards customers and employees, you are going to be talked about. There is no denying that the opinions of trusted family and friends play a key role in influencing the purchase behavior of others. Make it happen around the ONE remarkable quality that is the basis of your business and marketing.

3. Free Media. There’s a great big world of media available online and off, and a lot of it is free. Think big, develop a hook, and reinforce your ONE marketing message along with the who, what, when, where and why of your news release. Distribute online and off.

4. Knock Your Socks-Off Service. Be sure you and your employees are delivering unbelievably great service under every circumstance. Focus on your ONE remarkable quality and give customers knock-your-socks-off service.

5. Get in the Limelight. One of the best ways to spread your ONE marketing message is to speak to organizations, associations, clubs, and radio audiences. Determine where your target audience spends his/her time, select an organization that's a good fit, contact the program coordinator, and offer a presentation targeted to the audience.

6. Collaborate. Collaborations combine the efforts of two or more entities to explode joint marketing efforts. The keys: Identify potential collaborations, determine what each of you brings to the table, and create a win-win situation where you can shout out your ONE marketing message.

7. Hire a marketing coach. If you are stuck, it may be that you are overwhelmed, at "a fork in the road” and unsure of your next step. Enlist support. Hire a professional coach and consultant to help you redefine your unmistakable brand identity, your ONE marketing message, and action steps to ensure success.
